“It Is Just My Luck …”

We often hear people say things like “That’s just my luck” or “These things always happen to me” or “With my luck …”. The interesting thing is that these statements are almost always made in reference to something that has not gone the way we would have wanted it to or to explain that we don’t expect things to work out the way we want them to.
I cringe every time I hear someone use one of these types of statements. I cringe because unknowingly when someone says that it is “Just my luck that something bad will happen” they are simply reinforcing that which they don’t desire! Note it’s not the power of the words that make these statements so prophetic; it is the emotion behind the thoughts and the words. People truly do walk around waiting for a proverbial anvil to fall on their head. Why, because “that is just their luck”. Ugh!
The reality is that when we feel and say a statement like this over and over again we might as well be asking the Universe directly to bring what we perceive as misfortune upon us. We receive that which we ask for; we receive that which we attach emotion to. The Universe does not distinguish between what we perceive as good or bad, the Universe simply delivers based on the energy that we transmit.
Once you understand and accept that your emotions coupled with your thoughts have the power to create your reality you then begin to understand the impact of believing that “It’s just your luck …”
Next time you hear yourself begin to feel and utter this thought, catch yourself and turn your thought around. You can acknowledge to yourself that in some way you have attracted that into your life which you don’t desire and then say to yourself, “I am not doing this anymore, I live a blessed life and I now attract blessings and wonderment into my life!” The key is that the words themselves will not attract anything; it is the emotions behind your thoughts which create your world!
Amazing things happen to me on a daily basis, and you will often hear me respond to other people, “I live a blessed life” or “That is how my life works”. I truly believe this, these are not empty words, I do live a blessed life and my life does work in amazing ways. The key is that this is no accident, this is the result of understanding the power of my emotions and thoughts and being aware, being conscious. I live a purposeful life and this life is a splendid adventure for me.
The really great thing is that I do not have any secrets or any special tools that make my life great. Each of us has the innate power to create a journey that we love! We each are endowed with incredible gifts. We are each eternal energy. We each emit energy which impacts not only are own journey but also the journey of everyone else, for in the end we are all one.
Know your power, embrace your power, and understand that you real power lies in the core of who you are which is LOVE! In love all things are possible! Have the courage to believe in the possibilities!
I have so many examples of things working out “my” way because I voiced what I wanted. It’s unbelievable. That is why I know the Universe is abundant.
I read the book The Secret… it works that way…
Dr. Wayne Dyer talks the same way..
Lately I’m hearing this theory a lot.
I know everything is Energy in one form or another..and WE are too..
And it makes perfect sense..
If you act like you don’t deserve the best than you won’t be offered the best..
You have to Believe .. and know you deserve a Wonderful Life…
The more grateful I am for things the better my Life gets.. and my 13 year old said to me that he LIKES LIFE and is HAPPY yesterday..
That was so sweet… !!!
Life is great.. Heaven on Earth as it is intended to me..if we want it to be that way..
hugs..
I loved this post.. I’m going to reread it.. from time to time.. thank you..
Very true, Mark. There are times, of course, when purely bad things happen – job layoffs, illnesses, etc.
It’s so true that we have the power in our lives. It’s up to us how we use that power. It’s amazing how liberating it is to be aware of that power and not feel like a victim of life.
Mark,
You are right, that expression “It is just my luck” becomes a self-fulfilling profecy. The nice part is that you can use it as well in your favour. Everything you experience a blessing you say the expression and then the expression will have a very positive reinforcement!
What a great post! I was actually thinking about writing about luck/superstition on Friday the 13th, but something else came up instead. It was great to read this post because I’m very interested in the topic of luck and how people can make their own luck! As Boris added, the expression “It is just my luck” is self-fulfilling…
HI MARK-
Oh yes, this is all so true. On a parallel thought I recall another blogger C.OM posting about “feeling like a million bucks”…….I knew intuitivel and thankfully what he meant. Million dollar moments” happened all the time, in the most wondrous and simplest of ways – for example – when my husband calls and says, “I just wanted to hear your voice” – it is a million dollar moment, or when I cozy up on our couch with an afghan and a book, ot that first sip of wine, or the smell of home made sauce, and on and on…….. I remember asking my sister if she could think of any million dollar moments and as she is in the midst of grief she at first said, “I can’t think of one….”, within minutes she said, “well, this is a million dollar moment us sitting here on this gorgeous Autumn day just talking…”, and so the seed was planted and she now is aware of the good that surrounds her despite the loss and the grief.
Great post Mark -
Love to you my friend
Gail

Someone has been studying “The Law of Attraction”…
Em,
The law of attraction is intertwined throughout most of what I study this is true. I believe the term “law of attraction” has been overused and mis-used in the last few years and now has some interesting connotations associated with it, some of which are true, some of which are half truths.
That is good to hear.
I would agree with you.
Ah… LUCK – when Love – Understanding – Care – Knowledge, that are within us, are activated, when doubts are dispelled, when faith is abiding, when we deeply befriend our selves, our dreams, our aspiration, our intent, our purpose, LUCK is our reality!!
One Lucky Lady,
Rose Marie
I absolutely agree with you. About the secret the thing missing in the movie for me was there was nothing about taking action. I believe in the law of attraction however I don’t know anyone that gets to sit around everyday feel good and get rich without lifting a finger to help themselves or others.
The people behind the secret are “Big” in the Internet Marketing Arena. I’ll bet everyone of them worked their butts off before it took off. And they still are!
Tess,
For me “The Secret” lacked in a few ways. Like you said it did not talk about the action that has to go with the thoughts. I don’t beleive it really drove home the message that our emotions have to be behind the thoughts. My biggest problem with “The Secret” was that it focused on the external too much, big house, expensive car, love of your life, etc. I do understand that this was done for marketing purposes and that it was this way that the producers were able to entice so many people to see it and talk about it however it fell so short of what I believe the objective should have been and that was to change the consciousness of the world. “The Secret” acted as a catalyst to get people interesting in consciousness and then it just left people hanging. There should have been a follow-up movie to dive deeper and help those who are truly interested in changing their consciousness and the consciousness of the world. There is so much more to learn, so much more to do …
Thanks Tess for your thoughts on this.
I think we go through periods in life where we can attract more positive energy, aka, luck. Then there are periods when it better to lie low. This is an ebb/flow I feel in my day to day life. Some people call it good luck or bad luck, I feel it’s more a karmic flow that fluctuates.
Lou,
I use to believe as you do. Now I have come to believe that we are the creator of the ebb and flow and that we create the positive energy that attracts positive energy that we refer to as good luck. We can do this on purpose rather than do it unconsciously in a way that seems to be random. In essence we create our “luck”! Awareness is the key! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks Mark. I’m still not convinced we can repel “bad luck” simply by being aware, but I believe we have the same beliefs about living life with purpose and being magnets of positive energy.
Your posts always provoke me to think, I enjoy that!
Hi, I believe it is making the wrong choice that brings this on. Not the negative thought. As I have had many things happen in my life with no negative thoughts to bring them on. After so many miss haps, I then felt as though a cloud was over my hear hitting me in the butt with lighting bolts. I no longer feel that way. As you could see with the house we were buying. That could have been mine. But I did not pursue this one to the end as bad luck. I think it was not meant to be. But many things have happened to me like one of a kind incidents. I am not saying you are wrong. As many people do bring on things with negative energy. I see some things as karma. But most are wrong place at wrong time.
Grammy,
My question is why do we make wrong choices? My experience tells me that most if not all wrong choices occur because we do not listen to our intuition, we do not acknowledge the signs that present themselves. I do believe that negative energy does attract negative energy and in this way we create much of what comes into our life. I am still not sure about karma. Karma the way I understand it is punishment or reward for what we have done in the past. I am not sure the Universe works that way. For karma to work, that would mean that the Universe/God is judging us and I don’t believe that happens.
I appreciate your thoughts and beliefs and I am very glad that you share them, thank-you.
Karma to me is just Action and Reaction. No judgement. If you toss a pebble into the pond (Action), you will have a Reaction (ripples). Not good or bad.
That was easy, now how do I explain the negative stuff? O.K. how about illness (let’s say a cold or flu). It sucks. Bad. Is it punishment? No, I don’t believe in that. I think it is a combination of contracting a virus and being open to that virus. The Action is contracting the virus (not washing hands and being tired and run down). Reaction is the cold or flu.
I agree with you about wrong choices (not listening to intuition), but I also see wrong choices as learning experiences.
Wendy,
What you say makes sense. I agree failure is part of the learning and growth process. I often say if I don’t fail every so often than I simply am not trying hard enough.
My choices were good, some how most of the time, I get what I desire. But there is always some thing that goes along with it that is not so good. Like I bought my last home. And 1 week before we closed the house in the back yard disappeared. It turned out it was condemned and the government tore it down. So how know one knew at the time. what happened to it. I still went through with the sale at only a $5.000 drop in the price. But I really wanted the 2nd house to fix up too. This is only 1 example of things that have happened. And karma is a diffrent issue that would take way to much to explain why I believe in it. It is like the 10 fold rule. If you are aware of it.
Grammy,
I am not familiar with the 10 fold rule. Would you please educate me on this? I Googled this term and the only thing that I came up with was that the ten fold rule basically stated that if someone did something to you like hit you that you could hit them back ten times. Need your help on this one, thanks.
It is lack of knowledge like learn the hard way some times. Not all people are in tune with intuition. As There are outside factors that do not show there self till it is too late. And I do agree negative energy attracts the same. I try to be positive all I can and that make life better. I am also an empath. I feel energy from other people and can read most people. I also am drawn to people in pain. For some reason I have a way of helping them through what they are dealing with. But I can not help my self in the same way.
I agree. Put it in the universe and it will happen. Well said.
Mark, this is a very intersting post with lots of variations on the same thoughts. I do believe that what goes around comes around. I have seen it happen too many times. I also believe in free will and that we do make wrong choices sometimes.
Have a great weekend.
Thanks for this Mark. It occurs to me as I read this that people who are critical of the idea of “manifesting” what you think about say reality doesn’t change according to your thoughts — but that isn’t really the point, because no matter how reality actually is, you’re going to see whatever you’re focusing on (whether it’s rejecting, cold people or warm and receptive ones). That’s something that the psychologists and The Secret teachers agree on, I think.
Bless you Mark I totally agree. That’s why positive parenting is vital CHildren become conditioned by their parents to think the wrong negatively
Brilliant post Mark! I SO agree with you – and I cringe when I hear those “just my luck” statements too! It’s so much the power of the words we speak and the fact that when said often enough, we tend to BELIEVE them. I don’t want to believe crap is comin’ my way, I don’t intend to CALL it to come my way, and ya know what? I’m absolutely surprised if it does – and it is very rare! A little incident now and then sure isn’t going to make me change my positive attitude!
okay
i’m gonna try.
I mean I think I’m pretty decent about being grateful. But I say that phrase a lot even though I’ve been told not to and that I shouldn’t and stuff but I dunno…
it’s hard getting out of bad habits.
OH and I responded to your response from my last comment.
Can you help me out with that?
Yeah, I’ll chime in with the “I cringe at that statement too.” Another statement I hate is “I’ve got no choice.” That bugs me to no end. I’ve learned that you always have a choice. No matter what. Saying you have no choice makes one feel so helpless.
An example of “no choice”. “If I don’t go to work I’ll get fired. I have no choice.” Well, learned that the choice is still up to you. You can choose not to go to work and get fired. Or you can choose wisely, go to work and earn your salary. It sounds elementary, but really I feel it changes the emotion.
Same with statements like “I can’t afford”. I’ve learned to say “I choose not to spend my money this way.” Feels different. Feels better.
Wendy,
I agree the “I have no choice” is another very limiting message that we tell ourselves. We do have choices and how we express these thoughts sets the stage for so much more than we realize. Thanks for adding value to this conversation.
I love all the wisdom you share here!
Thank you Mark for another great post
I agree with all you wrote!
May your life always continue to be blessed!
Margie:)
Everything is synchronicty. Sometimes human beings knock some sense into themselves
I believe in this, but I also believe that some people just have the worst luck through no fault of their own. We all go through bouts of a string of bad stuff and we could be the most positive people in the whole world. A grey cloud….? Why do some have so many awful events happen in their lives? There is no answer. I certainly don’t believe God is testing them.
I read a book years ago when I first started working with young children who were born with multiple disabilities or who had sustained severe head injuries. I loved working with them, running a sensory stimulation program for them at a rehab centre. What occupied my thinking a lot then was how the families coped…. how they emotionally managed to cope and if I could given the same circumstances. I also was really struggling with the role of God in all of this…. The book which helped provide more insight and helped me shift my thinking/perspective was “When Bad Things Happen to Good People,” by Rabbi Harold Kushner. He has since written many books, but this one was specifically about his own journey to understanding as to why God “gave” he and his wife a child with the aging disease. Kushner focused on the story of Job.
I don’t believe everything happens because we will it to happen…. and I don’t believe that everything bad that happens is because we are stuck in a rut of thinking that it’s “just my luck….” Sometimes…..yes, and Sometimes…. well, stuff happens. Because it does and we have absolutely no control over it.
