How Do You Use Your Creativity?

When we think of people who are creative we often think of people who can create songs, music, dance steps, paint, sculpt, create vivid art from piecing together little objects to create a mosaic or string words together in way that form poems or writes in a way that captures are attention. When we reflect on creative people, we may call out people like Michelangelo, Brahms, Billy Joel, Martin Scorsese, Michael Jackson or Charlie Chaplin.
For most of us it is easy to recognize the creative genius of others. When asked if we are creative, many people will quickly tell you that they are not the creative type. Why do many people believe that they are not creative? Many people do not believe they are creative because they have a very limited view of creativity. When they think of being creative they think of people in the arts. This is a very limiting view and understanding of creativity.
The truth is we are all creative and weather we acknowledge it or not, we are creating all of the time. Creativity is thought, when we think we create; now that is a very broad statement so let’s dig into this thing we call creativity a little bit more. We are all creative, even the most linear thinkers are creative. Take someone who appears to be non-creative such as a data analyst, a number cruncher; some even refer to these people as “bean counters”. One would think that this is a purely analytical thing to do, yet this very same person who lives in an analytical world creates spreadsheets and graphs and discerns what the numbers mean and provides commentary and findings, all of which are very creative tasks.
On a broader spectrum each morning that you wake up you are creative. As we begin thinking we begin to create. We create the fact that we are going to have a cup of coffee or that we are going for a morning jog. We create our day as we mentally review what lies before us and how we will approach the day. We create our mood by the thoughts we have and the perspectives that we develop.
Even those who believe they are not in the least way creative are in fact often very creative. The creativity that I am speaking of here is the darker side of creativity, we often refer to this type of creativity as fear or worry. When a person thinks about the possibilities of what can happen in the future and they begin to formulate worst case scenarios they are in a creative mode. Albeit, worry and fear are not typically viewed as creativity they none the less are, as a matter of fact this is a type of creativity that almost everyone engages in.
Bottom line is, we are all creative. Creativity is viewed as a positive activity, however as you can now see we also use creativity in way that does not serve our wellbeing. If you are apt at creating fear and worry about things which have not yet happened than it is my hope that you recognize that you are indeed creative. Once we recognize our creativity it is simply a matter of how we choose to use our creativity. In other words, we being the limitless beings that we are have a choice to be creative in a way that creates a world of peace, love and harmony for ourselves and others.
As you can hopefully see, you are creative, you are going to create, you can’t help but create so why not go forth and create the world you desire!
People won’t create the world they desire because they are too scared of what others will think. It is sad but we live in a world of standards and too many people think that breaking those standards is wrong or too hard. But I do see what you are saying and would love to see more creativity among the “normal” people
Mark, I enjoyed that. You’ve reminded us of the power of our thoughts and how we can choose and create our inner world and how our own perceptions have an affect on others as well.
i was especially drawn to the part where you said even when we are using our creativity to create fear or worry we are in essence being creative.. for some reason my creativity has taken that vein as of late,, and although i am struggling to return to a more positive view of life,, i do see where i am creating a lot of the fear and worry i am causing myself to suffer thru…
my only hope is that soon it translates int something more acceptable,, and i can feel as if i am being creative in a positive way… very thought provoking article..
Hi Mark-
Very interesting perspective. I think this ties in well with my thoughts/beliefs about how – ‘we get back from the universe what we put out there’..so in essence, we are creating our ideal outcome (s).
Good spin on creativity Mark.
Love Gail
peace…..
it boggles my mind when people have difficulty seeing their own creativity. It is everywhere – from the kitchen to the bedroom to the work place to the way they work with people or their kids. People are constantly creating.
I do see the point above as well, people are afraid of creating happiness of obtaining their dreams so they create… comfort and safety and situaitons that will keep them exactly where they are.
Great post.
Hello Mark,
I read this post with a big smile; I have been writing my post for this week in my head and it is about this same topic! I agree, we are creating every moment of the day and we are the greatest artisans, everything we create is unique to us and we would be happier people to appreciate our art.
Thanks for this unique perspective.
The book I am writing about this week on my blog is so creative and from a economics guy – I am so amazed by the bigger picture he paints with his ideas of how to save the financial world, help more people to live better lives and keep the environment healing.
I think creativity – positive creativity needs to be nurtured and given a “shout out” more often.
So true, Mark. How we choose to use our creativity really is up to us. Another fanatastic post.
It is good to know that all my idiosyncratic goings on throughout the day are actually a form of creativity. Now I feel much more productive
I’ve used to walk around saying, “I wish I was creative…” I’d date artists, admire crafts in stores, you name it — all to get closer to the very thing I wished I was. What you wrote here is so true, though, and something I finally realized for myself: creativity is much broader than we give it credit for. We’re constantly creating. Now I know!
(I also realized that by saying “I’m not creative” it was an excuse to push my writing skills to a back burner and ignore my authentic self.)
I used to work with engineers (linear thinkers), but I learned, as you pointed out, that even the most rational of minds is creative in how it views potential solutions to a problem.
Fun post!
I’ve never thought about using creativity in a negative way but I guess it’s true. I usually don’t worry too much about the unknowns but it’s tough right now. I’m trying to use my creativity to find a solution and that involves planning for the future – but the plan has so many contingencies. Frustrating. I guess maybe it’s jsut better to have faith that things will work out somehow.
Hi Mark,
Like you suggest, creativity comes in so many forms. It is in the way we express our creativity that makes a difference. Thanks for a very creative post.
Creativity is everywhere – in letters and numbers, in life in general. I like this post!
PS: I left you a present on my blog this morning!!
Wonderful positive post you have created… Nice job.
Some days my creativity is making it through the day. Considering the many other things I do that others think are creative (art, and the like) Living at this time in my life is my most creative item.
A wonderful post this was: thank you for this nice reminder that one doesn’t have to be a Picasso to be a creator. One of the things I came to understand a few years ago was that my urge to bake in moments of stress or worry was actually an urge to create and be. When someone pointed this out to me, it opened up a whole new perspective for me on all of the numerous ways each of us “creates” every day.
This was a truly lovely read today.
I never looked at it from that way. Very creative Mark I loved the last line
Very inspiring, uplifting and empowering post. Creative, too.
I am just happy to have found these wonderful postings, great source of information and truths to adhere to our every-day lives.
Thank you,

Life’s Happenings
We create our heaven and our hell! Great reminder, Mark! I must add that although the darker side of creativity that you speak of is a form of creation, because it takes away from, not add to, it’s acually not creation…as creation brings forth newness, something born new from what is already there, or something born new from what is not already there. To take away from is more in tune with destruction than creativity. But we do, in fact, create destruction, oftentimes without even realizing it. PLL, C.
