Allowing Your Spirit to Catch Up

There was an explorer who was sent to Africa by his company to find a certain tribe in Africa. He was on a very tight time line, so he hired a handful of local Africans to help him carry his equipment. He and his team hurried through the jungle. They raced onward for three days. At the end of the third day, the Africans on his team sat down and would not move. The explorer urged them to get up, telling them of the pressure he was under to reach his designation before a certain date. They refused to move. He could not understand this; after much persuasion, they still refused to move. Finally, he got one of them to admit the reason. This native said, “We have moved too quickly to reach here; now we need to wait here to give our spirits a chance to catch up with us”. – Author Unknown

In most of the societies in which we live, daily life comes at a hurried pace. There is much to be done in a given day and many roles and responsibilities to fulfill. We are often in a big hurry to finish what we are doing so that we can start the next thing on our schedule and more often than not, we are trying to do multiple things at once to save time.  For many of us, there does not seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done that we want or need to get done.  In turn, we run ourselves ragged, don’t eat properly, don’t sleep enough and don’t spend enough time enjoying the very things we say we are doing everything for are often the first things to be neglected, our self, family, friends, etc.

I like the idea of giving ourselves time to allow our “spirit” to catch up. Some may say that is what the weekends and vacations are for. I would say that for many going to work on Monday is often a relief from the madness of a busy weekend or vacation.

We in fact do need to allow our spirit to catch up so to speak; however the way we do this is not by doing different things that keep us busy, such as a day off or a vacation. In fact we owe it our self, to our personal well being and subsequent growth to make time for our spirit to catch up daily and to develop an awareness of the state of “busy” that we too often find ourselves in. To allow our spirit to catch up as the natives in the story prescribed themselves is not to necessarily stop the activity as much as it is to change our state of being from being busy and hurried to being at peace in who we are and what we are doing. That is we can still go through our day and at the same time not be in such a hurried state of mind to get everything done. The truth is that often when we change our state of being from being in such a hurry we actually heighten our awareness and actually get more done while in a more peaceful and relaxed state.

Most of us have seed the sign that says “the more hurried I get, the further behind I get”. There is much truth to this, think about a time where you simply had to get a lot done in a short time. Chances are you will remember that you made more mistakes as you hurried along which ended up taking more time to complete compared to if you would have been relaxed and able to focus on one thing at a time.

We are on a wonderful adventure, take the time to embrace and enjoy your adventure and always find time in your day to allow your spirit to catch up!

This makes me think too, that we may gain experiences and knowledge through a process in our life without having a clear understanding of what just took place and where to step next…

I feel like this right now. Not sure of where to step next (though I’m taking baby steps in the safest direction possible) and how to deal with everything that has occured. I’m hoping that my understanding will catch up soon.

Maybe taking more breaks in my daily life will help that along too.

Great post (as usual). : )

Dear mark, as usual a wonderful post. If we stay calm, the power of life will help us. If we hurry, the power of life may harm us.

I always described myself as restless, but I think my spirit has been racing, it is I who has to catch up to it. ” Dances on Clouds” What I thought in my earlier years was the” jack of all trades and master at nothing syndrome” has now fallen into place and I have learned to appreciate my hungry spirit and my energy to do and be more. I think was is really important is to appreciate who you are and what you can give to the world. I have always enjoyed your title tobeme. and with” being me “comes with limitations and challenges and those are not to compete with anyone but myself. I guess it’s the swim team philosphy in me, you don’t swim to beat the other swimmers you swim to beat your own time, to be your best, to be me. If you challenge yourself and do that within a comfortable time limit set by your own passion and not others expectations, you will find it is your soul that guides you and your soul that will speed you and up or slow you down.
Once I said I didn’t fit in anyone elses world, but the more you experience the more you do, the more likely you are to meet those kindred spirits. The key is to do what you do with passion, then it doesnt become work, but a more of spiritual experience.
Yesterday, after driving 27 hours almost non stop I crashed and hid in my bedroom and did nothing…. I was Anti social and you know there was all this let down from trying to stay within the framework of time and I just knew I need time for myself and thats okay, we all need time for ourselves.
Catching up to our spirit or letting our spirit guide us… I choose the latter.

Relaxation brings peace with it, gives the mind a chance to rest and allow our insights to be heard and our awareness to deepen… Total quiet helps too, no cell phones or tv or the radio or computers as a distraction.

I wonder if you have ever read any of the books from the Lady’s #1 Detective series by Alexander McCall Smith? The adventures of the female detective redefine “the hurrier I go, the behinder I get!” I hinestly believe you would enjoy the humor and insights offered.

Wow, did I need to read this right now! I’ve gotten out of the habit of meditating every day and this post has reminded me of how important it is to my spirit to have some time every day. Thanks Mark :) x

I read this story just last week! How interesting. I don’t even know where it was that I read it………it’s a great lesson.

may our spirits always sing along with us on the same page.

I think this is why God gave us summers and beaches too……….to allow for the echoes of our spirits to catch up.

hope you’re getting to the beach some days Mark.

    cheers.

    Hi Mark,
I really love that quote. I love being in the fast lane as much as I savor the slow lane. Sometimes the lanes cross each other in transition and that’s the time I can’t do without. The in between time to reflect where I have been and where I am going. :D

I crave the time of letting spirit catch up…that is when my heart fills (feels) up. :)

Nature and painting are two places that spirit reconnects for me.

Thank you for the love and the light you share here!

Hi Mark – that’s a great story! For a long time I’ve made a point of hanging around and doing nothing much when things have been exciting – to give me a chance to integrate it all. My partner and I do this now, too, – when we have had big things on we’ll often do not much the next day.

Interesting to see you have a Leunig cartoon – he’s from Melbourne.

This is a beautiful story to say the least, our lives become robotic in nature. Stopping to allow our spirits to find their way — is magical.

We tend to value efficiency over effectiveness. With human beings most often efficiency isn’t effective. When we allow ourselves the time we need, we will find what we are looking for without loosing ourselves.
