How Old Are You?
How old are you? Simple question and for most we can answer this question fairly quickly, even though the older we get the less significance our age has and sometimes we have to stop and think about it for a moment. If you are like most, your answer was based on the amount of years since the time your physical body was birthed into this world by your mother. After all, this is how we as humans measure our age. One complete revolution around the Sun and we are chronologically one year older.
Now, let’s ask the question again with the thought in mind that we are eternal beings. How old are you now? Some of you may still count your years in this form and say that is how old you are, while others may reflect upon this question in a new light and come to the thought that if I am an eternal being, then I truly do not know how old I am, for I do not really know when I (my energy) was created or if there was a creation point..
Upon refection about how old I am, I have come to the conclusion that I don’t know, nor does it matter. In many ways this is an irreverent question. We know that age as we know it is irrelevant because we know there are very young people who have wisdom and talent beyond their years here on earth and we also know people who are older who in many ways don’t seem to have the wisdom we would expect a person in the later years of life would have. For instance, last night I was out running some errands and I caught a bit for an Oprah show on the radio where she was highlighting children who have remarkable music talents. There was a 3 year old who played the drums as if he had been playing for 40 plus years, there was an 11 year old who played the guitar as well, if not better then some of the greatest guitar players in this world.
When we come to understand that our earth age is probably not our true age and that age as we have come to understand it is not relevant to our true nature because we are eternal beings then we have a major shift in our perspective. Consider the freedom that you have when you don’t think of age in the traditional manner. We actually remove many limitations from our psyche when we disassociate ourselves with measuring our chronological years on earth.
There is no question that the body which we inhabit is a temporary form, one which changes by the minute as new cells replace old cells, not to mention the ravages of environmental factors and gravity which impact our body on a daily basis. This being said, much of how we think about age impacts even our physical form. Many become old in emotional, mental and physical ways because they believe that this is how a person of their age should be. Our limiting beliefs about aging in many ways accelerate the aging process. It is these same beliefs which cause a person who “retires” to often age very quickly, while others of the same or greater age seem to defy the “normal” aging process and serve in high pressure, intense thinking positions in Parliament, Senates and Congress, in higher education positions, etc.
The way most think of aging is a very self limiting thought pattern which has significant impact on our aging process. Our thoughts are very powerful and have a direct impact on our overall health.
I suggest to you today that you consider how you view your age and what impact your current mindset on aging has on you. I ask you to consider the thought of your eternity and how disassociating your self with chronological age will impact your life and the way you interact with others. Consider the possibility that a four year old may in some way be the same age or older than you. If you truly believe that, would you give more intellectual consideration to the thoughts of that four year old?
You are eternal, this human form is one part of your journey and it may very well not be the first leg of your journey. Imagine the possibilities!

Dear mark, thank you for your thoughts on age. You have delivered a perfect post.
For me these questions are all matters of personal experience. If I have made one, I have an opinion, if not I will stay mute. I have no experience of any eternal soul being in existence since the gods come into being, therefore I am careful and cling to this one life, trying to make the most of it. Maybe this will change if I ’see’ it.
I believe that we are souls in physical bodies and how I would love to know my eternal age. In the school where my kids go are many gifted and talented children. They are often social outcasts because they are socially immature. Get to know them. They don;t know the social rules of the mass but they surely are far ahead in an understanding of the world and its problems. These are surely old souls.
It is true that thoughts about aging make you old because of your expectations you don’t do enough body and brain exercise anymore.
These days though more people keep young.
To me, age as humans perceive it, isn’t measurable in human terms. The physical body deteriorates based largely on how we treat it, yet our soul has existed over many lifetimes, in many dimensions which defy our concepts of “time and space.
this a very great post…it really made me think “how old I am”…in different perspective…
Godbless
Loved this one!! I agree with you completely… age is relative… insignificant when put into a large context… I would say you my friend are wise beyond years… what does that say about how old you are? old? I think not… eternal
Thanks for the thoughts!
Very interesting blog!
Wonderful post!!!
As I say on my blog “I am spirit, my body merely a transport”.
Several years ago, I found that as soon as I stopped clinging to the idea of “one life, one body” my life became so much easier and I am able to relax and detach from events. I am more in control of my emotions. I know that everything works for good and that death is a passage to another stage of existence, not the end of it. I don’t necessarily want my time on earth to end yet, but I feel like I’m no longer afraid of leaving.
A wonderful side-effect of this is that I stopped feeling responsible for events that were not my doing. People are free to choose their own path and it is not up to me to play God and tell others what they should and shouldn’t do with their lives. Actions carry consequences, but this is what our time on earth is about: learning (or some say remembering and applying) concepts that aid in our evolution as souls.
All I know is that I have so much to learn….I think of myself eternally a child. *smile*
Have a great week, Mark!
I am of many ages at various times, often ten, occasionally sixteen and a dignified thirty two and as my children mature, a woman who gracefully accepts the midway mark of a hopefully future centurion. I do not view life as a predetermined set of circumstances that we must fulfill or a preset plan of destiny based on our chronological age. I believe we are here to experience the most out of our earthly time. Most importantly we are here to absorb the beauty around us and to give back of our own worldly gifts.
There is a song a friend made a u tube to my photographs of, It is s a song by the spiral staircase, “ I love you more today then yesterday” The song has more depth then just one person’s love for another, as I wake this morning, and I sense the beauty of life that surrounds me, I realize that I do indeed love more today then yesterday, as my love and appreciation for life truly grows.
One of the most common quests of all humans on earth is the quest for longevity, to live longer, to find the proverbial fountain of youth. From the beginning of time man searched for the legendary fountain of youth. In 1513 Ponce de leon the Spanish explorer went looking for the so called “fountain of youth. “ As I see it youth is an internal mechanism in the brain, as long as you are turning the wheels of the mind, consistently viewing the unknown as possible lessons of tomorrow, you will maintain a growth in a youthful way, in what to many becomes a period compared to that of stagnate waters.
Yes, it is true that our body transforms taking on various forms that may equal to our maturity level on earth, but I see that as a positive and beautiful experience. The most important aspects in our experience on earth is likened to a recipe for happiness, keeping our bodies fit and healthy, placing positive thoughts in our mind and allowing the good to feed our soul and most importantly surrounding ourselves with people of like mind, warm and loving companionship, honest and rewarding friendships and enjoying the experiences of life as we share them with kindred spirits. This brings us truly a form of the fountain of youth, as we keep our minds alert and hearts open we allow our self to journey with each day becoming a little more beautiful. “I love you more today then yesterday and if all my dreams came true I’d be sharing them with you.” Where dreams set the stage is where the excitement for a new day begins.
I have not aged, nor have I met with my final chapters, the saga continues, as the chapters of life are being written as we speak.
I’m going to start listening to my three and a half year old a bit more closely… : )
Hi Mark,
Provocative post. We are all ageless – an eternal light of love.
I agree that age can be limiting. Age has nothing to do with making connections with people, it doesn’t guarantee nor exclude those who we connect best with. I always enjoy hearing others thoughts on age and aging…time is an interesting concept.
nice post mark!
Although I am a 24, but I wana be always like a lil kid of about 10. Away from the wicked face of real world, full of innocence, open to new ideas, totally free of what others will think! Away from worries and enjoying every moment of life.
Hi Mark – I have thought for some time that older and younger people are on a level playing field because we have all been around for so long in previous incarnations.
And I remember hearing or reading somewhere that it’s the role of children to show their parents the way (not necessarily intellectually, but somehow with their energy).
Cheers – Robin
*grins* I really liked this post. Its a good un!
Hi Mark…………..it’s been a long while since i had a chance to stop by……life has been a whirlwind aging process!
So, how old am I?
As old as my very favourite pair of jeans.
As old as my very favourite piece of music.
As old as my very favourite book.
As old as my very favourite place to go.
they are all ageless………………….timeless…………as i am.
beautiful post. I’ve missed reading your timely and timeless thoughts.
Thanks, I’ve never thought of age in quite this manner, and it makes very perfect sense. I just knew I wasn’t as old as the number of candles on my last birthday cake!
