The Peanut Butter & Jelly Parable

peanut1.jpg

The lunch whistle blew at the construction site and the workers all gathered together to eat their lunch and share their stories of the day. As the men opened their lunch boxes, one of them said, “ummm, fresh roast beef sandwich today”, another exclaimed “I have a turkey sandwich from the leftover turkey dinner we had last night” and still another bragged about the delicious ham and cheese sandwich he found in his lunch box.  Another worker, who had been listening to all of this, complained, “You guys are lucky, all I ever get is peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! I am sick of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! If I open this lunch box today and find another peanut butter and jelly sandwich I am going to scream! He opened his lunch box and screamed as he found yet another peanut butter and jelly sandwich. One of the men said, “hey, if you are so sick of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, why don’t you ask your wife to pack you something else?”  The other man said “Wife? I’m not married, I pack my own lunch”.

I don’t recall the original source of this story, however I do love it. It cleverly illustrates how many people live their life.  Like the man in the story who complained about the lunch that he created, we tend to do the same thing in our own life. We complain about different aspects of our life, yet we don’t do anything to change what we are complaining about! We continue to do the same things that end with the same results, in turn, we act surprised and complain about the results. This by definition is insanity!

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results – Albert Einstein

You hear people living this way all of the time. They say things like:

  • - Things never work out for me
  • - This always happens to me
  • - I never win at anything
  • - I never make the right decisions
  • - My relationships never work out
  • - I always pick the wrong kind of man/woman
  • - I never meet the right kind of people
  • - I never get promoted
  • - I am always over looked
  • - I am never appreciated for what I do

The list goes on and on. These thoughts, weather said out loud or not impact our results. We think and say the same things every day, yet we somehow are surprised when the results don’t change!

What are you saying or doing on a repetitive basis that is creating a constant result that you don’t want?

By the way, just because something worked for you in the past, is no indication that it will work for you in the present. Be courageous and try something new. You may be surprised at the results!

  1. I’ve lived by a few ‘always’ and ‘never’ attitudes for much of my life. I’m working on weeding those out of the garden. Tired of growing weeds when I can have a fruit tree and some flowers for the bees and butterflies to enjoy. *smiles*

  2. Hi Mark:

I love the story you told and how true it is that “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and hoping for a new result.” We are creatures of habit and it sometimes takes a miracle to help us change. One of the things I do to create changes in my life is take a small action step that I know will enable me to accomplish my goal. An example: I want to exercise in the morning so I make sure that I have to call someone after I exercise. This way I become accountable and it helps me to exercise.

Thanks for your concern. I was in California at a Coaching Conference and there were 1500 coaches there from 15 different countries. What I learned is that we are whole with all our imperfections. Helen

I enjoyed your peanut butter & jelly parable. Where I live you could say we have a ‘peanut butter & jelly’ story, the man in your parable would most likely appreciate.

There is a child in town that is allergic to peanuts. So no peanut products are allowed anywhere near the junior high, including peanut butter & jelly sandwiches. As this town is very poor, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches used to be served for free to children who had no lunch. Now they get no lunch.

I’m sure the fella’ in the parable would be happy to eat peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, if the choice was to eat nothing instead.

  4. I love that story….its so true people complain all the time. At work I refuse to eat in the faculty lounge because I just don’t want to hear it. My social quota is at times narrow. There is a woman at work who is constantly complaining about her American Express bill, and eagerly shares with everyone the amount she pays out every month. It irritates me in the worst way. This woman makes double my salary and with her husbands salary they clear six figures very easily. I don’t have such problems because mostly I live within my means.

I just want to say to her ” look at yourself, step outside of yourself and examine for Gods sake. If you continue to do the same thing every month how on earth do you expect anything to be different.”

People don’t seem to be able to step away and see the patterns of repetitive behaviors.

  6. I’ve never, ever, had a peanut butter and jelly sandwich :-)
Apart from that apparent ‘missing out’, I think the problem such people encounter is a mind-set bordering on pessimism. This not only takes away their ability to do things different, but they end up walking a path through life where they only receive pessimism back.

  8. Ahhh LOL! I like your story Mark.

You are so right… we complain about the very reality we are creating!
    How silly of us!

Just this morning I caught myself doing this very thing… talking about doing something but not doing it!

Thank you for this very nice reminder to create the sandwich, I mean the life we desire! ;-)

Hugs and peace to you Mark,

  9. Mark,
    Ha ha ha ha!

I love peanut butter (extra crunchy) and I really enjoyed the story. Often times when we want different results, we have to do different tasks.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to get some peanut butter. ;D

You put a different slant on the story, that is great. True, often times we do not appreciate what we have until we can no longer have it. Thanks for your thoughts.

It can be tough for people to step outside themselve and watch. The other issue is that often people do not want to see the truth. Thanks for your thoughts.

So true, we often are what gets in our way and because we are so close we fail to see that we are the obstacle. Thanks for your thoughts.

No PB&J, you should try it some day! I believe this is American fare for the most part.

This story is also a reminder of how important it is to receive our life wisdom in humorous as a well as serious ways. LoVe it and the Einstein quote too.
