How easily is your reality influenced? If someone criticizes you or compliments you how does that impact your reality? Our reality is created by our perceptions, therefore if our perceptions are influenced by the opinions and thoughts of other people and events then our reality can often be shaped by the influence of others.
How many people suddenly questioned the safety of the bridges they normally, without a second thought, drove over every day after the bridge collapsed in Minneapolis, Minnesota last week? Some people’s reality was influenced so much by the collapse of the bridge that they probably sought alternate routes in an attempt to avoid bridges altogether. This one incident quickly altered people’s realities as so often-external events do. The marketers of the world have an understanding that we create our own reality, even though it is an elementary understanding, they sell their products by attempting to influence you to create the reality that they want you to create. Marketers do this by instilling fear, uncertainty and doubt in your mind. We all see adverts which attempt to influence our perception of reality by offering questions about the fact that you might have termites in your walls, or will your insurance company respond at three in the morning or are you putting of some offensive body odor or that you might have restless leg syndrome, etc. The list goes on and on. When we hear these types of messages, we begin to question our reality and we may create a different reality because of this external influence.
We are the creators of our reality. We create our reality with our thoughts, which are followed by actions. Our thoughts are often influenced by external sources. If someone tells you that you don’t have a mind for math and that you will never be any good at math, you may take that as your reality and continue to repeat to yourself that you are no good at math, therefore creating your reality. In the majority of cases like this, it’s not that the person does not have the intellectual capacity to be good at math, it’s simply that they have created a reality in which they are not good at math, a reality which may very well have be born of a thoughtless, casual remark by an influencer in your life and then reinforced by your very own thoughts! See how this works? We do in fact create our reality. We create our own reality all day long. Let’s look at some more examples of this; If I say that “Geez, I am never appreciated at work for what I am capable of”, guess what reality you are creating? If I say, “I always pick the wrong type of person to have a relationship with”, guess what reality you are creating?
When you talk to people who seem to be living a very blessed life, what you may deem as a successful life, you will find a common trait among them, they create their reality just like everyone else does, however they create the reality they desire rather than one they don’t desire. For instance, have you ever met a person who seems to be very lucky, they seem to always be in the right place at the right time? You may even secretly ask yourself, why, why them? It really is quite simple, they create their reality be saying things like,
“Geez, I am always so lucky”, “I always seem to win”, “Win I go shopping, I always find the best deals”, my personal favorite that you will often hear me say, “I live a blessed life”.
See, it’s not about who is the most intelligent, the most talented, the best looking, etc. It’s not even about who is a great goal setter. What it is about is the reality that each of us creates for ourselves!
The real question you have to ask yourself is, who is creating your reality. No matter how you shake it out, YOU are creating your reality. Once you acknowledge and accept this fact, then the next huge question you must ask yourself is, how much are you allowing external elements to influence how you create your reality.
What reality will you create today?

Naked Soul –
I have been a lurker on your blog for a while now and really enjoy reading your insights. Your posts are always thought provoking. Thank you for your blog!
This truth of creating your own reality is one that I have come to learn the hard way in the past couple of years, I struggled against being a part of a negative community that I allowed to influence my thoughts and perceptions to the point that it was incapacitating. It is amazing how different I feel now (on the inside) that I have recaptured the ability to indeed create my own reality and keep the opinions and influences of others in check.

Just as we question the truth of other things in the world, so we must question the truth of our own reality. If someone says you are one thing, or another; are you simply going to believe it on their say so? Have a little sales resistance.
Part of setting and reaching goals is having the confidence to tackle things you have never done before. Are you going to shrink from that because someone else said you can’t do it?
How do you know your bad at math until you try? How do you know you have termites unless you look. How do you know the bridge is faulty unless you inspect it?
Don’t let your reality be shaped by others. Let it be shaped by yourself and your experience in life. A person should know their own limitations, defined by their own experience, not by others opinions of our abilities.
Was it God, or luck, or the good life you have led, that allowed you to cross the bridge 30 seconds before it fell? I’m sure many have asked themselves that question. At some point you have to admit the simple truth; shit happens, no matter how good (or bad) you try to prevent it.
Don’t let the fear stop you from trying. Don’t let one failure make the decision for you. Try again, and again, then you will know. You can’t judge your path in life by the path of others.

Hi Mark,
I always maintain they we are as good as the company we keep. If we surround ourselves with positive beings we will be positive. If we surround ourselves with negativity, we will be negative. Newspapers exploit our fears to sell more papers. It’s just unfortunate that we buy it hook, line and sinker. Creating a loving reality not only propels us further, but it effects everyone around us.
P.S. And I must ad that you always create a loving, provocative and positive reality. Thank you Mark.

Alexys just said it… “We are as good as the company we keep” I had noticed after the fact, that while I was going through a ruff time in my life, the company I kept were in the same boat as me. And, the reality that was created “continued” in misery.
This went on for a while. After I made the choice that it was my time to move forward, I shed those who were not walking down the same path as me, and their influence or life events no longer had an effect on me.
Your right mark, we do create our reality, and it is us that allows others to influence it.
Making this world a better place, have a good night!

So then no ‘destiny’ is involved?
Nothing that happens to us is pre-ordained?
I struggle with this. Did the victims of Katrina create their reality? Did the people who lost their lives on that bridge, or the children that have starved to death in Dafur, or the babies that are murdered by their parents?
Did my neighbor create her breast cancer? Did her daughter?
If I say to myself all day long, “I can paint like Waterhouse”…and I could paint all day long, every day…would I ever reach that level of genius?
Are there limits to the reality we can create?
Who’s reality is the ‘correct’ one? I could place a multicolored ball in the center of a group of people. Depending on their vantage point, one might say, “That is a green ball”…and his reality is showing him a green ball. From another angle, another person says, “No, it’s a red ball” – because they only see the red. That is their reality. But in this case, reality is based solely upon perception.
And is there a great Force at work behind the lives of humans?

There is this principle that I always taught my students and especially taught in my leadership seminars that I call “Who claps for you?” What it means is that it is up to you to determine whose opinions affect your view of yourself and validate your accomplishments. I always let them know that it was totally up to them whose applause they heard. When we reach maturity on this, it is, in the end, our own applause that matters the most.

Hi Mark,
Very nice post!
I’m afraid my reality is swayed too easily!
You are so very right and your insight is most profound.
I have noticed in my own life a need to NOT even read or watch many of the news stories because I don’t even want the idea to enter into my spirit.
Thank you for this wisdom Mark… I learn so much from you!
Blessings my friend,
Jen

Greetings Mark! It’s the Comlete Idiot again.
“We are as good as the company we keep.” I like that statement. I was just wondering why no one has associated it the other way around, since the post is about ‘creating our reality’?
“The company we keep is a reflection of who we are.”
Think about for a moment. Has anyone ever said anything to any of us that we hadn’t already thought, ourselves? WE think it and others come into our lives saying exactly what we’ve thought. If we think self judgments, then other people are going to reflect those self judgments back to us.
((Grace)) Always embraces all ways. Every moment in Life is a Present. A Gift. Whether happy or sad, whether spent in misery or bliss. How appreciative and grateful are we for our Presents? How much do we Love Life? ALL of it, not just the ‘positive’?
A great many of us BELIEVE that suffering brings us closer to ‘God’ and is the coin used to buy our way into Heaven. That makes whatever agency that brings this suffering into our lives, a messenger, bringing to us what we have chosen to value.

Bop,
Thanks for coming out of the shadows and welcome!
Sounds like you have a good awareness of how you create your reality. It is true, we must be aware of who and what we expose ourselves to, for everything has the poetential to impact the reality which we create.
Thanks for your thoughts!

Time,
You expressed many wise thoughts. My favorite was ” You can’t judge your path in life by the path of others”. This is so very true and probably the most common mistake that people make which leads to frustration, depression and even suicide.
Thanks for you wonderful thoughts!

Alexys,
Thank-you for your kind and generous words. I feel the love that you send.
Agree, we can choose who and what we expose ourselves to and what we buy into. We must choose to create the reality that we want rather than falling into the trap of creating the reality that other people want.
Thanks for your thoughts!

What an excellent post! I was just thinking of writing a post on the power of the spoken word, but you’ve beaten me to it!
We are indeed CONSTANTLY creating our reality and that means a few minutes, an hour or three hours of meditation and affirmations can’t offset negative or defeatist thoughts, fears or conditionings.
Thanks for helping us all remember that.

This was great…again you are completely right. thank you for reminding me that I need to be sure of myself, and not conditioned into my actions and life. Now I need to re-evaluate somethings. on a mission! Thanks!

Wolfgang,
Welcome and thank-you for sharing your thoughts. It is true, the only applause we hear or sadly don’t hear in the end is our own.
Posted by tobeme on August 8, 2007 at 6:52 pm
Jen,
Thank-you. Feel not alone, most of our realities are too easily swayed be the media and others. It is important to be aware of what we expose ourselves to and to understand the motivation behind what we are exposed to.
Thanks for your wonderful thoughts!

Sue Ann,
Yes, a very astute observation. We are a reflection of the company we keep. We must turn the mirror on ourselves and ask why.
Excellent thoughts!
I don’t agree that we must suffer as a price to get into heaven. I do believe this is a justification which we use to explain the darker side of life. All is perfect within itself, our suffering, if we choose to view it as suffering is part of our perfection.
Thanks for your wonderful thoughts!
Posted by tobeme on August 8, 2007 at 6:58 pm
Sibba,
Welcome. I am not sure I understand you comment. Meditation, going within, does in my mind create a larger good, however, if I am understanding what you are saying, meditation in and of itself does not eliminate our perception of what we view as the dark hours of life.
Thanks for your thoughts.
