Knowing
In the article “Chemistry” we discussed the “chemistry” found between two people. We talked about how this chemistry that we feel is indescribable, however we all know when it is present. We have a “knowing” about how we feel. This “knowing” transcends traditional logic or science, that is we can’t see it, feel it or even prove it exists for that matter, however it is very real all the same, it is a “knowing”. It is a knowing that transcends time and space. We may have this knowing without physically seeing each other, we may have this knowing from a look across a crowded room, we may have this knowing upon the first casual touch which makes us melt, etc. Now when someone speaks of having a “knowing” most people should have a point of reference.
Truth is that many if not all of us have all kinds of “knowings”. We also call these “knowings “gut feelings or intuitions. Most of us can relate a story of having a gut feeling about something and going against our gut feeling only to find out that our “gut feeling” was right. We should have listened to our gut feeling!
In the book “Extraordinary Knowing”, Elizabeth Lloyd Mayer, PH.D. explores the concept of “knowing”. She interviews numerous people who have some sort of incredible knowing. One story that illustrates having a knowing very vividly is a story about a neurosurgeon and a knowing which he has. This neurosurgeon is world renown, he is the doctor who is called to work on heads of states when they require neurosurgery. He is so sought after because he has a phenomenal track record of never losing a patient. This is a man who is very passionate about what he does. He is on the staff at a major teaching university, however he doesn’t teach anymore, something that he loves to do. When asked why he no longer taught, the good doctor stated that he loved teaching, however he had to give it up. When asked why, he stated that he had to give up teaching because he could not teach what he does. Very frustrated, he stated that he could not teach what he does. When probed as to what that means, he told why he never loses a patient. When someone requires surgery, he goes to the patient’s room and visits with them, he waits, he may wait 30 seconds or he may wait hours. He waits for something that he could not possible explain or teach to his students, he waits until a distinctive white light appears around his patients head. He knows it is not safe to operate until it appears. Once the white light appears he knows that it is safe to operate and that the patient will survive! How totally incredible is that? This man of science works from having a “knowing”. He realizes that there is no way to prove what he knows, there is no scientific explanation for what he knows, however he knows what he knows, he has a knowing!
Does this doctor have a special gift? Yes, he does. The interesting thing is that we all have the same ability, we all have the ability to have a “knowing”. Many people have these extraordinary knowings, however, they keep it to themselves for fear of the repercussion they would receive from society, family and friends. In our world we have been taught for different reasons that speaking of these knowings is not acceptable. Not acceptable to the point where it could cause the loss of a career, loss of respect, loss of friends, etc. Not too long ago people were burned at the stake for expressing such knowings. Many organized religions have persecuted people who express that they have a knowing, unless of course it was deemed to be a knowing bestowed from above then these same people who may have be tried as witch’s were raised to a level of sainthood for having their knowing.
Truth is we all have knowings, most of us have been taught as we mature into adulthood that we must suppress these knowings, not work off of hunches or gut feelings, to work only from the facts. Work from that which you can prove. Interestingly enough, most of us know deep inside that we should always listen to that inexplicable gut feeling, that intuition, that “knowing”. We must learn how to tune back into our “knowings”, learn to trust our intuition, our gut feelings. These are real and they are true when are intent is pure!
Our power is incredible, we will explore more of our power in the near future.
I really enjoyed this piece. It was very meaningful and inspirational. “Knowing” I believe is our communication with God, it is His way of reaching out and guiding us along the way.
You are correct in stating,”Truth is we all have knowings,…These are real and they are true when are intent is pure! Our power is incredible”
Thank you for this beautiful post. You are an amazing writer because of your souls intuition.
Our minds are so powerful, yet, society would rather bog us down with “things” less informational.
As a youngster I had a few “things” happen that I told no one about, until I was older and met someone who sounded as if she understood, and she did. It became clearer then, and since I was already on a road for more positive input in my little brain, every now and then it continues.
I believe this is what those poor women went through during the “witch-hunt” days. Unfortunately, a minor few knew it was an “inner” thing and not witch like at all.
History can teach alot, and help us to understand that which many still go through today.
Insightful dialog, Thanks!
Enreal,
I am very glad the you enjoyed this piece so much and that you found value in it. Thank-you for all of your generous comments.
I think one of the other reasons people hide their “knowing” is that there are so many people out there faking a “knowing” and hustleing peoples money.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Coffee Mesiah,
Yes, society in general does stifle a lot of our power. Most people have little trust in those who express their ability to be intuitive. It’s great that you found someone to talk with and someone to guide you on your journey. Thanks for sharing so much!
Absolutely fascinating about the surgeon! You are right, many of us have intuitive “knowings,” and in my experience, the more we listen and trust, the more frequent they become. My belief is that they are always there, but somewhere along the way, most of us forget to listen and acknowledge. It’s hard when we live in a society that is so left brain driven. This would be a very interesting subject to pursue further.
You are so right sometimes we just know there is a connection – I wonder why it happens though. Why do we recognize some people as our own tribe? This knowing works both ways there are certain people we meet we immediately distrust and take a dislike to.
I used to think that before we were born we existed in God as thoughts and similar thoughts banded together and the opposites ones away.
I really like reading about these things for I believe such things exist, thank you for sharing this story.
Carla,
I agree, the more we listen to our intuition, the sharper it becomes. The key is to develop awareness which in turn will develop more intuition, more knowings.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Random Magus.
When we meet people, I believe we are reacting to their energy. If our energy conflicts with the other persons energy that is when we have that feeling of mistrust or dislike.
Thanks for your thoughts!
Tumel,
I know these things exist. Thanks for the thought!
Hello! I missed this book! Thank you for blogging it. These are the insights that help us recognize and expand our own abilities. And thank you for adding me to your blog roll.
wendy : )
Wendy,
Hope you enjoy this book, very well written. You are welcome. I enjoy your blog as I am sure the people who read my blog will.
For years I relied on my news media connections to keep me updated on this type of information. I have shifted to the blogsphere where testimonials are much better referrals than a press release. ….
Got the book. Great resource! I have ongoing profound metaphysical experiences in my life and look to science and those who are researching this type of encounter to help me learn how to present it in a form that others can also tap into, or at least have a sense of awareness that it is available to each of us. I am also enjoying surfing your links and will post several…with a credit to you (of course) . I enjoy your connections and your insight!
Talkingtonightlights,
